Faith Formation

Holy Trinity Parish is committed to lifelong faith formation. We recognize that all human beings are called throughout their lives to grow as disciples of Jesus. Therefore, we offer formation for preschool children through our Sunday Celebrate program and our School. Families can choose our Blue Ribbon school or our excellent Faith Formation program for their children in grades 1 – 8.  We have a vibrant youth ministry program to serve our high school students.

Holy Trinity provides sacramental formation for parents who present their children for Baptism; for young people preparing for Reconciliation, Eucharist, and Confirmation, and for couples preparing for marriage. In addition, many adults join the Church through the RCIA (Rite of Christian Initiation for Adults) process. Our Parish makes adult faith formation a priority by offering a variety of opportunities, including Bible studies, small faith sharing groups, Generations of Faith, retreats and much more.

Through our Faith Formation programs, Holy Trinity continues to strive in helping parishioners form their faith no matter what point they find themselves in their life-long faith journey.

We welcome children to the Liturgy at Holy Trinity.  Children do wiggle and make some noise.  We view these occasional interruptions as part of family life at Holy Trinity. The following paragraphs give you a guide on how to approach the Mass with your children.

Before coming to Mass, talk with your children about church manners which includes using quiet voices as well as moving quietly and slowly in the church. (i.e. No running)   Sit near the front of church so that your children can see and hear.  If your child is increasingly noisy or restless, it is probably time to briefly leave the church pew.  Feel free to go to the back of church or any of the vestibules.  You can still hear Mass form these areas.

Take some time to explore the church when it is empty.  The church is open most weekdays from 8:30 a.m. – 4:00 p.m.  You may enter the church using the southwest door.  Together, you and your child can discover the many wonderful and interesting parts of the church and feel the history of Holy Trinity.   Teach your children some of the easier prayers we use at Mass.   Start with The Sign of the Cross, the Our Father, and the Sign of Peace.  Teach your child to cross their arms over their chest when proceeding up to the altar in the Communion line. This indicates a desire for a blessing from the Minister of the Eucharist.  In this way, young children feel a part of the Eucharist.

Holy Trinity invites your 3-6 year old child to participate in Catechesis of the Good Shepherd, a Montessori approach to faith formation which helps prepare children for life in the church and the world beyond.  We currently offer two different sessions of Level One, which serves the 3-6 year old child, on Monday from 5:00 pm to 6:30 pm and Tuesday from 4:00 pm to 5:30 pm.  Space is limited and pre-registration is required.  Please contact Michelle Helm in the Faith Formation office at 255-3162, ext. 200 or at

Children 4 through 4th grade are welcome to participate in the Children’s Liturgy of the Word during the 8:30a.m. & 10:30 a.m. Masses.  The children are dismissed after the Opening Prayer and return after the Offertory Hymn.  This is not formal religious education but a gathering where the children hear the readings and the homily appropriate for their level of understanding.  Please contact John Mertes at or call 255-3162 ext. 224.

The Faith Formation Program meets each Wednesday evening from 6:30 p.m. to 7:45 p.m. in the Holy Trinity School Building from September through early May. Life Night is a gathering that takes place from 6:30-8:00 p.m. usually on Wednesdays for all Holy Trinity High School Parishioners (both Public School and DCHS students).  We will meet in the 8th grade rooms unless noted. The Diocese of Des Moines has changed the process for Confirmation.  Parishes have been asked to prepare for and celebrate Confirmation when the young people are in high school.  We feel our young people will continue to grow in faith, hope, and love for the Risen Christ and His Church.  Holy Trinity will celebrate the Sacrament of Confirmation in the Fall semester of one’s junior year of high school.  During freshman and sophomore years of high school, young people will enter into preparation and formation for the Sacrament. The Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults (RCIA) is the way by which people become full members of the Roman Catholic Church. RCIA is a faith journey in which a person is introduced to the community, beliefs, liturgy, and the apostolic work of the Church.  RCIA is designed primarily for those seeking Baptism, but also includes those Baptized Christians from other denominations that may be seeking membership in the Catholic Church.  Baptized Catholics/Christians are also welcome in RCIA if they are seeking Confirmation, thus completing their initiation Sacraments.

The purpose of any process of Christian Initiation is to allow people the opportunity to deepen their encounter with Christ and the Catholic community.  The process involves several aspects; Period of Inquiry, Period of Formation, Period of Sacramental Preparation, Sacraments of Initiation, and a Period of Growth and Reflection.  Know that Holy Trinity Church welcomes you or if you have been away, welcomes you back to our Catholic Church. Please contact Jim Wilwerding at 771-1847/ or call the Parish Office at 255-3162 ext. 128.
